Jesse Helms, the very name arouses emotions like few others. I was once secretly told in hushed tones by a yellow dog democrat “You know I voted for Jesse, we all did”.
Jesse Helms could “tote the water” for North Carolina in exemplary fashion. Once a missionary friend of mine, frustrated by the Byzantine bureaucracy of Romania in receiving a visa, contacted Sen. Helms office and in a week my friend had not one but two visas.
Jesse Helm’s heroic support for Ronald Reagan to win the 1976 North Carolina primary thus ushering in Reagan’s political future in redeeming this nation from the throes of Jimmy Carter’s malaise and ushering in the end of the Cold War with the fracturing of the now defunct Soviet Union will probably stand as his best lasting legacy. A close second is his opposition to the U.N.
History will show that Jesse Helms had few, if any, moral failings other than telling the truth bluntly with scant regard for the consequences. Opponents of Jesse attacked the very things that Helm’s loved, namely a patriotic, nationalist America undiluted by hedonism, liberalism, or any other vice which would destroy this nation.
Sen. Helms death on July 4th is fitting. The last time I saw Sen. Helms he was tired and ready to retire. He has run his race and is now resting with two other American heroes who died on July 4th Thomas Jefferson and John Adams.
We’ll miss you Jesse.
